We’re so excited to share a heartwarming story from our community. 💛
Niamh and Sophie live on opposite sides of the world, but what brought them together was something deeply personal – both are living with Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES). They first connected in our private Facebook group, a space for CES sufferers to share experiences, support, and strength. Through messages, video calls, and mutual understanding, their connection grew into a beautiful long-distance friendship – one built on empathy, resilience, and the unique bond that comes from shared experience.
Their story is a reminder that even through pain and distance, connection is possible — and sometimes, the people who understand us the most are the ones we’ve never met in person.
“Sophie and I connected on Facebook thanks to a post she made on the group page in January this year. Sophie, like myself is a younger member of the group and was looking for people who were around her age to link in with and discuss life post CES. I am 29 and Sophie is 23, the 6 years between us are few and our similarities are HUGE. Soph and I have the same level of post CES injury and residual issues from lack of medical involvement/urgency from our care providers, this was a big thing to bond over as we could both really relate to each other. Soph and I have chatted pretty much every day over Facebook messenger, exchanging voice notes, videos, messages and just day to day chatter and laughs. Soph has been a huge support through my life post CES as she is 2 years ahead of me recovery wise and has helped keep me sane! I love having this friendship with Soph and would definitely describe her as a best friend. Soph is amazing and such a powerful, fun, decent human, I love her to bits!
I am hoping in the next few years to travel to Melbourne from Ireland for a sleepover and hangout session! My partner has family ties and relatives in Melbourne which is the weirdest part as now he has my motivation too to go over and meet Soph. So even with a 9 hour time difference and over 10,000 miles the CES support group has helped two girls in their 20s become best friends!”
Thank you, Niamh and Sophie, for showing us the power of friendship. 💬🌍💛
